Our Story
Mekdes B. Teklemariam spent over a decade in Fairfax County, Virginia -- one of the highest-performing school districts in the United States. With a BSc in Industrial Engineering and an MSc in Advanced Studies from Sweden, she returned to Addis Ababa with a mission: bring world-class supplemental education to Ethiopian families.
Fairfax Learning Studio is named after that community -- a place where education is taken seriously, and every child's potential is treated as a promise worth keeping.
We are not homework help. We are not exam prep. We are a structured, mastery-based learning program that starts with a diagnostic assessment and builds your child's skills from exactly where they are -- not where their age says they should be.
Results That Matter
Every child starts with a comprehensive assessment. We identify their exact level in reading, math, and English -- not their grade level, their actual mastery level.
You receive a detailed report every month showing which skills your child has mastered, which they are working on, and what to expect next. No surprises.
Our curriculum has clear stages (R1-R10 in Reading, M1-M9 in Math, E1-E6 in English). Your child advances when they demonstrate mastery -- not when the calendar says so.
How It Works
Your child takes a comprehensive, no-pressure assessment. We test reading fluency, math operations, and English proficiency across multiple skill levels. Takes about 45-60 minutes.
Based on the diagnostic, we place your child at their exact mastery level -- not by age or grade. A child in Grade 4 reading at a Grade 2 level gets placed at R3, where they can build real foundations.
3 sessions per week with trained tutors. Small groups (4-8 students) or 1-on-1. Each session targets specific skills in your child's current stage, with clear mastery criteria.
Every month you receive a detailed report: which skills were mastered, engagement observations, and what's coming next. You'll always know exactly where your child stands.
What We Teach
Pre-Reading to Literary Analysis
Letter recognition, phonics, blending, fluency (WCPM), comprehension, vocabulary, critical reading
Number Sense to Algebra Foundations
Number sense, addition/subtraction, place value, multi-digit operations, fractions, decimals, ratios, pre-algebra
Oral Foundations to Advanced Academic English
Oral language, sentence construction, grammar, academic vocabulary, essay writing, formal register
